Police Arrest, Torture Activist “Major” in Bauchi, Allegedly Break Limb
Bauchi, Nigeria – April 22, 2026
A human rights activist, Ishaq Abubakar, popularly known as Major, has reportedly been arrested and severely tortured by police officers in Bauchi State, leaving him with serious injuries, including an alleged broken limb.
According to sources, the incident began when a friend of the activist took his motorcycle into town and was stopped by police officers. The officers reportedly demanded that he bail the motorcycle, prompting him to contact the owner.
Upon his arrival, eyewitnesses said the police identified Major and declared they had been searching for him. Shortly after, a police Hilux vehicle carrying several officers arrived at the scene.
Witnesses alleged that the activist was brutally assaulted before being taken to the Central Market Police Division in Bauchi, where he was detained for four days.
Further reports claim that during his detention, Major sustained severe injuries, including a broken limb, and was allegedly denied access to medical care. It was also alleged that he was not allowed to observe his daily prayers throughout the period of his detention.
The incident has raised serious concerns over alleged human rights violations, including excessive use of force, unlawful detention, and denial of religious freedom.
As of the time of filing this report, the Bauchi State Police Command has not released any official statement regarding the allegations.
Civil society groups and concerned citizens have begun calling for an independent investigation into the incident and accountability for those involved.
